Illuminating the Republican Party's origins and transformation over twenty years of sectional rancor, bloody civil war, and national reconstruction is a daunting agenda for any single book, let alone a collection of essays. This slim volume on the Republican Party's first generation succeeds because editors Robert F. Engs and Randall M. Miller have enlisted a cast of master historians who are at the top of their craft. The result is an edited volume unusual for its thematic coherence, overall consistency, and accessibility to nonspecialists and students.
