Judith M. Barringer's book investigates the iconography and cultural construction of hunting in archaic and classical Greece, with specific emphasis on hunting's role in reinforcing the social norms of the Athenian aristocratic elite. The nature of the evidence is such that, despite its title, the book focuses primarily on archaic and classical Athens. Inscriptions, sculpture, and literature are used in conjunction with vase painting to explore the meaning of hunting in a society in which capturing prey was no longer vital to daily survival. |
