Jennifer A. Loehlin's book examines the impact of the Wirtschaftswunder ("economic miracle") of West Germany in the 1950s and 1960s on the home. Her study focuses on the spread of household appliances during this period. Loehlin also discusses new styles of interior decoration, the growing popularity of convenience foods, the proliferation of cleaning products, and broader changes in consumption patterns and approaches to housekeeping. Her research included a survey of several leading West German women's magazines and interviews with a dozen women who were housewives during this period. This is not a very broad set of sources, but Loehlin was able to get a surprising amount of information out of them. Her monograph is well organized and clearly written, and her analysis is intelligent and thoughtful. |
