Inhabitants have dotted the Pajarito Plateau in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico since prehistoric times. By the turn of the twentieth century, Latino homesteaders were scattered throughout the area. The remoteness of this arid region combined with the poor growing conditions at 7,200 feet meant that residents, primarily cattle and sheep herders, could not sustain themselves year round. |
