When admirers of a deceased historian honor that person with a festschrift, they should have two aims: that the essays meet the high standards of the scholar being honored and that at least some of the essays be of such quality that they will be read by scholars for years to come. It is a pleasure to report that the papers in this book meet both goals. They do justice to Nash, a true "historian's historian" who pioneered research of the American West in the twentieth century. Nash was also a warm, pleasant person who always had time to listen to others. |
