| Struggling Unions, a new thirty-five-minute video by Henry Bass, offers case studies of three unions in internal turmoil: the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (Carpenters), the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), and New York City's municipal union, District Council 37 of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). An apparent aim of the film is to help reverse the decline of unions by encouraging greater democracy and less corruption. But by the time students finish wading through the dank, dismal waters of the three labor organizations presented in the film, they might be inclined to favor less unionism, not more! |
