Stephen Brumwell's examination of the British officers and men who fought in North America during the New World phase of the Seven Years' War is a significant book about a neglected subject. To be sure, we have a growing shelf of important books about the pre-1763 imperial wars, but they have a very different focus from Brumwell's tome. Harold Selesky, Fred Anderson, and James Titus have written insightful monographs about war in individual colonies. Anderson, Douglas Leach, and Ian Steele have each produced two or more volumes that devoted most of their attention to the final struggle that saw Britain emerge supreme in North America in 1763. |
