Book Review
Oil Baron of the Southwest: Edward L. Doheny and the Development of the Petroleum Industry in California and Mexico. By Martin R. Ansell. (Columbus: Ohio State University Press, 1998. x, 302 pp. $62.50, ISBN 0-8142-0749-9.)

The name Edward L. Doheny is unfamiliar to most American historians. If included at all in American history texts, Doheny appears in a list of several prominent oilmen implicated in the Teapot Dome scandal, which involved access to public lands in the 1920s. Martin R. Ansell's excellent biography of Doheny should convince scholars working in a variety of fields of the historical importance of this largely forgotten man. |
