Introduction
Readers of the Journal of American History, indeed, all of us in the world of academic and public history, owe a great debt of thanks to Tom Schlereth for his work as contributing editor of the "Exhibition Reviews" section. We are honored to pick up this tradition, and we will continue to offer critical reviews of exhibitions in various venues. We also want to review other representations of history in American public culture: living history projects, historical pageants and reenactments, historic preservation projects, virtual museums, and the social processes that lead to creation of memorials. We also plan to invite critical essays on issues in the representation of history in public.
Readers will note, for example, that in addition to exhibition reviews, this issue offers a review of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park exploring, in particular, sensitive church-state issues that complicate the National Park Service's interpretation at "working" Catholic churches. This issue also offers an analysis of the 225th anniversary events at Lexington and Concord exploring, in particular, tensions between different reenactment groups and between reenactors and the National Park Service.
