There has been a delay in answering them owing to the fact that I have just returned to the school from my summer home. I am writing to say that I shall decide within the next few hours what will be the best manner of taking up the case of Liberia. The more I think of it, the more I am convinced that the wisest thing will be to make a perfectly- frank statement of the case directly to the President. I feel reasonably sure that he will do something to relieve the situation if it is possible for any American to do so. Please say to Bishop Scott that I am very grateful to him for his 336
