APRIL . 1906 I am afraid our friends at Washington (the judge and his wife) ~ are playing a big game. Somehow or other, everything that they know about our program, has already reached the enemy. I would respectfully admonish you to be careful what you say to, or in the presence of, either of these people. The friendship of almost a lifetime, between Governor P. and myself has been severely strained of late, if not entirely broken, and I believe much of it is due to the influence of this pair. They have called the Governor's attention to my failure to inform him of the matters which have been calling me to Washington from time to time, and aroused his suspicion. ~ have had a letter from him within the past few days, and after reading it, became convinced that this family had much to do with the old gentleman's present unhappy state of mind. However, these are not the days for any such considerations, and I therefore wish you a grandly successful celebration of the Twentyfifth Anniversary of Tuskegee. In the spirit of these words, the foundation of this institution was laid in 188~, through a gift from the State of Alabama. For twenty-five years, then, the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute has been fishing for men. What of it, and with what results? In our quest we have used land, houses, henneries, shops, laundries, kitchens, class-rooms, the Bible, arithmetic, the saw, the 561
