The BOOKER T. WASHINGTON Papers To Joseph Oswalt Thompson South Weymouth, Mass. July 4, 1904 Personal My dear Mr. Thompson: I am in receipt of your letter of June pith which I have been delayed in answering owing to being continually on the railroad. I heart! most excellent reports when I was in Chicago a few days ago about the manly stand that the Alabama delegation took in regard to all matters affecting our race and the party. We won a great victory. I fear I shall not see you until you come North to go to Oyster Bay. I will try to be in New York at that time. In regard to the Mexican mission, I would state that I have some question as to whether Captain Scott t would accept the mission owing to his important business connections. Would it not also be a better plan to try to push Mr. Hundley for that position in case Captain Scott could not for any reason take it? I will be willing to cooperate with you in any way that I can. I saw the President for an hour and a half last week and went over matters very thoroughly with him. I asked him to appoint Judge Kyle to the Panama Judgeship and he agreed to do so at once and in my presence wrote the order to Secretary Taft.
