The page presentation framework of the Booker T. Washington papers is designed to provide researchers worldwide with searchable access to the thousands of pages comprising the fourteen volumes, most of which are out of print. Adapted from the National Academy Press's Open Book framework, this framework allows searching down to the page level, provides sorting of search results chronologically, enables easy navigation across multiple volumes, and allows page-by-page local printing (via PDF) of every page.

JULY . 1905 since my last report. The first meeting was held at about eight miles from Tuskegee near a bridge in the woods and was on the style of the old fashion picnic. The number there was not so large but the people seemed very attentive and promised to help do something to better the community in which they lived along the lines mentioned. The second meeting was held yesterday at Baptist Cluster church i.e. I was given as much time as ~ wanted to speak during the church service. The people in this community are trying to build a school house and have a good school but they had grown somewhat cold on the subject during the past few months. It seemed from their promises that they mean to begin afresh and complete the school house already begun. I also got quite a number to promise to help in getting every Negro in Macon county to quit buying whiskey and put that money in land and home improvement, schools and churches. Slowly but surely the Negro in Macon county is getting his eyes open and I am quite sure that he is making progress in at least the same proportion. Yours very truly,Clinton J Calloway Conference Agent TLS Con. ~6 BTW Papers DLC. To the Editor of the Columbia iS.C.] State [Tuskegee, Ala.] July 8, 1909 Personal and Confidential Dear Sir: ~ have just had time to read the enclosed editorial from your paper, and the following statement I am making for your personal information and use because I do not think that you will willingly do any one an injustice. I would state that I am quite sure that no one can put his hands upon a single statement made over my signature, or in any interview, or in any public address wherein I have claimed that the Negro was superior to any other race. The fact is, I have always discouraged our people from making boasts of any character. 319
