The BOOKER T. WASHINGTON Papers eral Dress Making Establishments, one Drug Store, six good Hotels, several Cafes and Barber Shops. In the past twelve months quite a number of brick buildings have been erected by Colored men. Recently, Dr. Brown of Miss. came here and purchased two vacant business lots at a cost of $~7,800 on which Mr. Carter also of Miss. purchased a business lot on which to erect a brick brig. He will erect, this Summer, two three story brick buildings. As to Professional men, I don't think there is any place in the Country where we are better represented. We have nine Doctors and twelve Lawyers, some of whom are the most influential at the Bar. We also have three Weekly papers and one Daily Paper all of which have a · · nlce clrcu atlon. I sincerely hope that the impression made on this occasion, will counteract the effect of some of the anti-Booker Washington sentiment prevailing in that little community. You will find the presidents a two-faced sort of a fellow. He is always plausible, gifted with a wonderful flow of language and quite scientific in some of his discussions. He will tell you one thing when he means another, and will say something that will not be remembered, when he meets a person, concerning whose attitude he is not certain, but if he knows him to be opposed to 272
