The BOOKER T. WASHINGTON Papers Downing remained in London until 19~7. He wrote several plays and a rlovel, The Black and White Tangle, which was serialized in Duse Mohammed Ali's journal, The African Times and Orient Review. He also wrote about life in Liberia in The American Cavalrymen (~9~7~. For the last eleven years of his life he lived in Harlem, where he continued to write about Liberia.
