The page presentation framework of the Booker T. Washington papers is designed to provide researchers worldwide with searchable access to the thousands of pages comprising the fourteen volumes, most of which are out of print. Adapted from the National Academy Press's Open Book framework, this framework allows searching down to the page level, provides sorting of search results chronologically, enables easy navigation across multiple volumes, and allows page-by-page local printing (via PDF) of every page.

FEBRUARY · ~ got To Hollis Burke Frissell Tuskegee, Ala., Feb. I, 1902 My dear Dr. FrisselI: ~ am very sorry indeed to hear that you are so disappointed regarding matters at Charleston. ~ did not know before the receipt of your letter that you did not receive the space that was promised you. ~ do not know to what the other portion of your letter has reference. The Exposition as a whole is far from the success that it was expected to be and in this of course Hampton will share ir1 the general disappointment. Those in charge of the Negro Department however, are in no way responsible for the general failure of interest being taken in the Exposition. Since we had promised to go into the matter I felt that the only thing was to make a success of the Negro Department as far as it could be done and I think we have a reasonably creditable exhibit in that department. I very much fear however, that the attendance on the Exposition as a whole is going to be poor all through. I think I wrote Miss Hypes some days ago that I have advised Mr. Roscoe C. Bruce to visit Hampton during March or April with a view of seeing the work there and also with a view of selecting some teachers for next year. Mr. Bruce has spent a month here looking into matters, and I confess we were very much surprised at his very clear insight into matters and were pleased to note how well he is up on all matters in connection with the latest phases of education. He is to take charge of our academic work next year. Yours truly, Booker T. Washington TLS BTW Folder ViHaI. ~ Elizabeth Hyde. From Timothy Thomas Fortune Red Bank, NJ., Feb.
