JANUARY · 1 go 1 colored Lawyer of this city who is the Attorney General of the Grand Army of the Republic of the United States shares that · e opinion. He is a man who has tried to live by his wits preaching, lecturing and representing himself as an agent of some Southern School. I have learned from the very best authority that he beat Mrs. Mary Stearns of West Medford out of a snug sum of money. He also subscribed for the Library of the World's Best Literature and the Company had to put its bill against him in the hands of a Lawyer who, failing to collect, authorized the Company to seize the books. I know the Lawyer quite well and this information he gave me himself. Whether the Company has seized them or not he could not say. Thomas lives in a very modest way on Tylerson Street, Everett in a house containing eight rooms and a bath. The rent is fifteen dollars per month and he sub-lets a part of it for eight dollars per month. He has but little dealings with colored people except as he can use them to his own selfish and damnable ends. Not one good word have I heard concerning him, but he is universally decried as a low, mean, contemptible cur. I shall continue my investigation and if I learn more I shall let you know. It has been whispered that he is mentally unsound, but I believe that he has studiedly and maliciously taken advantage of the present state of the public mind to betray his race into the hands of its enemies. This blow, I fear will do us irreparable harm. ''He is a colored man and therefore speaks authoritatively,'' say those of the Tiliman ilk. Nothing conceivable could come at a more convenient time for our enemies and at such an ill time for us. ''The die is cast.'' Yours very truly, Robert W.
