The BOOKER T. WASHINGTON Papers From Alonzo Homer Kenniebrew Tuskegee Ala, June -Woo Prof B T Washington I hereby submit the following report of the Health Division for the term ending May -Woo. Glad to say that we were so fortunate as to not have a single death from sickness during the term. The five from ptomaine poisoning last summer ''99'' (Toxic fever) are not included in this report. We were successful in keeping small pox out of the School although we might have had an epidemic from one suspicious case in November but being discovered before it developed and was moved out and quarantined & there developed small pox. The epidemic came within 3 miles of the school. Miss S. May Smitht Head Nurse was employee! by school fist Sept. ''~899'' and has come up to expectations very well indeed. During the term we treated in the hospitals Teachers ~ boys 459 girls 309 total 773 (4 students treated in families). Teachers treated in their rooms on the grounds & not sent to hospital Ladies 23 Men 2~. Those treated off the grounds who do not board in the hall lo total in all Teachers 19 Students 772 ''8 in all for the term by Resident Phys. As to disease, I will name only the most important ones. Many of the others are of little importance 8c minor ailments. Bronchitis Catarrh Jaundice Chron. Gastric inflamation Pleurisy Peritonitis Appendocitis Bright's disease Dysentery Pneumonia Males Females 8 3 3 1 3 1 1 1 1 o o 1 14 3 3 Malarial fever 30 14 Fractures (broken bones) 2 One of colarbone the other of Upper & Tower arm 8c had to be amputated ~ Injury from laundry M. 21 5bo
