The page presentation framework of the Booker T. Washington papers is designed to provide researchers worldwide with searchable access to the thousands of pages comprising the fourteen volumes, most of which are out of print. Adapted from the National Academy Press's Open Book framework, this framework allows searching down to the page level, provides sorting of search results chronologically, enables easy navigation across multiple volumes, and allows page-by-page local printing (via PDF) of every page.

MAY 1 899 they cannot go much higher than they can carry the Negro with them. A.M.E. Church Review, ~5 (Apr. 1899), 80~-8. Booker T. Washington From Timothy Thomas Fortune . . New York, May a, 1899 My dear Friend: I got your telegram on returning from Washington and went to Boston Sunday night, and am just back. Monday morning I saw a great many of our men and tested them indirectly as to the prevailing sentiment, and I discovered that the course o the Young's Hotel banqueters was generally condemned and dis. ~roved. I then went to see Barnetti and Plummer. They are both out for blood, and will renew the fight in the League next Monday night. I outlined the sort of resolution they should offer at the meeting and they are sure it will go through. They are both good friends of yours, as is also Addison of the Courant, with whom I spent an hour. I met Rev. C. S. Morris2 in the Courant office, and he is also cloing good work. My appointment with Mr. Clement was for 3 o'clock. He was all smiles and graciousness and plunged right into the subject o the banquet. He said he was much grieved at the attitude of the speakers, but that he had unlimited faith in your wisdom and discretion and that he did not think the matter woulc! hurt you in the least in Boston. He promised to publish anything I should write on you or any phase of the race question. P. J. Smith caller! while I was talking to Mr. Clement and remained with me until I left the depot at 5 o'clock for New Haven. Yours truly T. Thomas Fortune Our newspapers are still reading the riot act to you. ALS Con. ~54 BOW Papers DLC. boa
