APRIL · ~ 898 Foster Peabody, Gibson established the Primary Industrial School, which used few textbooks, had no grades or fixed course of studies, and had a term of twelve months. The school substituted tools and benches for textbooks, and some twenty lines of handicraft were taught. Other factory towns followed Gibson's example, notably Augusta under the leadership of Lawton B. Evans. In ~ gag George Eastman called Gibson to the presidency of the Mechanics Institute at Rochester, N.Y. His services as a Red Cross worker in Germany and Poland early in World War I undermined his health. Returning to the South after the war, he became principal of the Savannah public schools.
