I send under separate cover matters sent by Judge Hammond arid Edward Atkinson. Atlanta Journal Dec. 3—has a squib with flashing headline —''He differs with Booker Washington. Colored Professor of Latin and Greek Believes in Higher Education for the Negro.'' Some fellow named J W Gilbert, Payne's Institute, Augusta spoke of you as ''preaching narrow and erroneous ideas.'' About ten lines. Springfield Republican has nice sketch & Asso. Press report & cut of blUg. Everything goes well. Hope you'll take good care of your health. Yours Respectfully— Emmett~J. Scott ALS Con. ~33 BTW Papers DLC. ~ John Wesley Gilbert of Paine Institute, Augusta, was reported in the Atlanta Constitution, Dec. 3, 1897, as a speaker at a church meeting in Atlanta. He criticized BTW as advocating that ''the negro only needs an industrial education and that he should consume his life in drawing water and hewing wood.''
