The page presentation framework of the Booker T. Washington papers is designed to provide researchers worldwide with searchable access to the thousands of pages comprising the fourteen volumes, most of which are out of print. Adapted from the National Academy Press's Open Book framework, this framework allows searching down to the page level, provides sorting of search results chronologically, enables easy navigation across multiple volumes, and allows page-by-page local printing (via PDF) of every page.

Many of the towns in the State have waked up to the urgency of the situation & are taking just such steps as I have outlined to you. If you are prompt in giving instructions in this matter I can at least give you one week's service. I could have written you two days earlier but Jewett has been down with typhoid fever and has demanded very much of my time. I have talked the matter over with Mr. Logan. Hoping you will understand that I have no interested motives other than for the general good of the public alla the school I am very truly yours S. S. H. Washington ALS Con. ~35 BTW Papers DLC. From Emmett lay Scott Houston, Texas, Aug. 6/~897 Dear Mr. Washington: ~ have your favor dated July ~6 and mailed August fist. Replying thereto, I beg to say that I cannot accept the terms of your offer. The amount of salary offered is too smaI1 for serious consideration, especially now since I find that Mrs. Scott cannot be with me there next year; and must be provided for here at Houston, while I am at Tuskegee. I am not unmindful of the great opportunities offered me by being associated with you, but ~ should try to be so valuable as to merit a sum, for salary, greatly in excess of what you offer. Thanking you most cordially for your much appreciated offer and regretting the necessity which precludes acceptance of it, I am, Yours very sincerely Emmett J. Scott P.S. If you decide to come to Texas again soon I shall be glad to hear from you. Mrs. Scott sends regards. ALS Con. 2 BTW Papers DLC. 3~7 .. EJS
