Devine TLS Con. ~7 BTW Papers DLC. ~ Edward Thomas Devine ~ ~ 867- ~ 948 ) was born in Union, Iowa. He received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1893 and became active as a teacher, author, and civic leader. At the time of this letter Devine was general secretary of the Charity Organization Society of the City of New York, and later he headed many kinds of disaster relief work, edited Survey (~897-~9~), and wrote several books. 2 Attached to the letter is a list, not in BTW's hand, of schools in Alabama (Mt. Meigs Institute, People's Village School in Mt. Meigs, Snow Hill Institute, and Talladega College) and Georgia (Atlanta University, Spelman Seminary, Clark College, Morris Brown College, and Clay Street Normal and Industrial School in Thomasv~lle).
