M AR C H · ~ 8 9 6 studied and watched the effect of the Peabody and Slater Fund, realize the value of Dr. Curry's policy of using these two funds in a way to stimulate institutions to do the best work, letting them understand that they will be helped in proportion as they help themselves. In this way we are fast reaching the point where a few schools will be on their feet to the extent that they can serve as models for others. sth. The fact that Dr. Curry is a Southern man of broad and liberal views gives him an advantage in dealing with this problem that few realize. The colored people have the greatest faith in him. The Southern whites have the highest regard for him. He speaks to Southern people individually and through the Southern State legislatures and other influential bodies concerning their duty to the Negro in a manner that no other man could do, and his influence and help in this direction is very noticeable and salutary. Thus he is placed in a position to understand the problem in all of its relations, and is of the greatest help to both races. Any change that may result in setting aside or interfering with Dr. Curry's policy I feel would be a set back to the whole work in the South. Yours sincerely, Booker T. There are some vital matters in connection with your work and attitude towards the school that must be changed otherwise ~ decide that it is best that your connection with the school cease at the end of the present year. My position in respect to the students and the public is peculiar, and ~ must see that every one does the highest service in benefitting the students, and must get rid of any obstacle that prevents this result. In the first place you do not respect authority and this defect is fatal in an institution where the will and policy of the Principal are expected to be carried out even in the remotest corner of the school in the actions of teachers and students through the head of a departi45
