The page presentation framework of the Booker T. Washington papers is designed to provide researchers worldwide with searchable access to the thousands of pages comprising the fourteen volumes, most of which are out of print. Adapted from the National Academy Press's Open Book framework, this framework allows searching down to the page level, provides sorting of search results chronologically, enables easy navigation across multiple volumes, and allows page-by-page local printing (via PDF) of every page.

SEPTEMBER · I 894 To Julius B. Ramsey [Tuskegee, Ala.] August 28th, 1894 Major Ramsey: It is very important that you organize at the opening of school a well-equipped fire department among the students and teachers. This department should have drills at least once a month, oftener if possible. I wish you to see that fire buckets are kept at all times in their proper places in all the large buildings on the place. See that the hose etc. are kept in order; that the students and teachers receive instruction in the use of the trap-doors; see that these trap-doors are in working order at all times. Also see that the fireaxes etc. are kept in the proper place at all times. In giving fire drills I wish you would see that the companies are instructed that in case a building is on fire, the buildings near it are carefully protected. Men should be instructed to go on the roofs of the buildings and cover them with wet blankets or use the fire buckets so that no more than one building may be reached by the fire. See that the ladders etc. are kept ready for use at all times. This is a very important matter, and ~ think I have already stated to you that the fire department was not at all satisfactory last year, and I hope you will make it what it should be this year from the very . · oeglonmg. General instruction as to what to do in case of fire should be given in the chapel at all times, or as often as possible. TLpf Con. ~3 BTW Papers DLC. To George W. Scotia Booker T.
