Frederick Douglass will resign the post of Minister Resident and Consul General to the Republic of Hayti sometime during the ensuing summer. In the event that he does resign, I desire to succeed him.i If you favor my desire in this respect, I will thank you to have the kindness to secure for me the signatures of three to five of the leading Republicans at your point on one of the two blanks here enclosed, and all the Ministers of the race in your city if possible, upon the other, and return the two to me by June fist.
