The page presentation framework of the Booker T. Washington papers is designed to provide researchers worldwide with searchable access to the thousands of pages comprising the fourteen volumes, most of which are out of print. Adapted from the National Academy Press's Open Book framework, this framework allows searching down to the page level, provides sorting of search results chronologically, enables easy navigation across multiple volumes, and allows page-by-page local printing (via PDF) of every page.

The BOOKER T. WASHINGTON Papers supply the funds for his dream. If his autobiography was embellished and somewhat mythological, the documentary record was even more amazing, for it told of a black man that white men and even his black critics never dreamed of. The talent that would later make Washington the spokesman for many black Americans emerges in this volume. Unlike the success hero of the autobiographical writings, Washington was in reality a complex man who played various social roles according to need. His black intimates did not call him ''the wizard'' for nothing. xxxv~
