I rec'd your letter today, and was so glad to hear from Portia and hear she was well. I will give Mr. Parrish2 the Receipt for my box, and he will see about it. ~ am tolerable well. Tell Portia I want to see her very much. I was glad to hear Portia could read. Portia you must learn to write, and write to Grandma. Give my love to your little brothers and Mama. to little John Washington4 and Aunt Susie.5 Tell me what your little brother is named. Any assistance you can give me will be thankfully received. Parrish, a white resident of Maiden, was reported in the 1880 census as ''Receiver of Court.'' 3 BTW Jr. 4 John Henry Washington, fir., born about 1887. 5 Susie Miller Washington, wife of John Henry Washington. Formerly of Charleston, W.Va., she married Washington in 1886. The couple had eight children. She died in Tuskegee in 193~. C. Smith 4o5
