The page presentation framework of the Booker T. Washington papers is designed to provide researchers worldwide with searchable access to the thousands of pages comprising the fourteen volumes, most of which are out of print. Adapted from the National Academy Press's Open Book framework, this framework allows searching down to the page level, provides sorting of search results chronologically, enables easy navigation across multiple volumes, and allows page-by-page local printing (via PDF) of every page.

AUGUST · 1887 From J. F. Jackson Birmingham, Ala. Aug ~ ~ t~887] Dear Sir Yours received yesterday. ~ had thought before writing you, that my proposed suit against the railroad, following so close upon the case of Prof Councill and that other Huntsville incident, would probably stand in the way of my entering your school as a teacher. ~ am willing to make any personal sacrifice, but would not think for a moment of doing anything that would impair the usefulness of such an institution as yours or that would tend to create a feeling against it. I am resolved, come what may, to bring the suit, if ~ can raise the $~oo.oo, the attorney's fee. I haven't the money myself. My friends here said they would raise it for me, but ~ fear from the little interest taken in the case, they will not succeed. I can tell next week what can be done.7 Meanwhile ~ would not have you hold the position openj~if you can fill it. Miss Shoecraft2 Is still without a position. Her address is Muncie Indiana. There is a young lady in Ann Arbor Mich whom I think you could employ. She took the degree of A.B. from Michigan University at the recent commencement, and has had several years experience in teaching. She Is one of the brainiest colored women in the country and belongs to a family famous throughout the West for scholarship, culture and refinement. I know of no other lady whom I can so freely recommend to you. She desires to come South, and made application for a position in the new university. If you desire to correspond with her, address Miss Sophie Jones Box ~ 763 Ann Arbor, Mich. Desiring for Tuskegee that the present may be her most successful year, and thanking you for the high (in my opinion too high) estimate you put upon my ability, I remain, sir, Very truly Yours ALS Con. ~ BTW Papers ATT. A, J. F. Jackson Gino record was found of any suit brought by Jackson against an Alabama railroad. 2 Miss Shoecraft later accepted a position at Alabama A & M College in Huntsville. 38I
