The page presentation framework of the Booker T. Washington papers is designed to provide researchers worldwide with searchable access to the thousands of pages comprising the fourteen volumes, most of which are out of print. Adapted from the National Academy Press's Open Book framework, this framework allows searching down to the page level, provides sorting of search results chronologically, enables easy navigation across multiple volumes, and allows page-by-page local printing (via PDF) of every page.

MAY' 1882 To Flames Fowle Baldwin Marshall] Springfield, Mass. May 9 ~ 882 Dear General: I came here a few days ago intending to stay only a day, but meeting with more opportunities than I expected ~ have just gotten ready for a new field. Mrs. Howard and Drs. Eustis2 and Buckingham3 have been very kind to me. I spoke in Dr. Eustis' church Sunday evening. The ''Springfield Republican'' has favored me. ~ guess you have seen an account it gave of the meeting in Dr. Curtis' church. I notice that the last four issues4 have referred to my being here in one way or another. Mr. Tolman5 came over from Chicopee Falls to invite me there. I speak there next Sunday evening. I go to Ware and Enfield tomorrow. Most every one on whom I have called has helped me some, but it comes in small sums which will necessarily require a good deal of time to be spent in the collection. I fee] much encouraged so far. Have not heard from Miss Davidson yet. I saw Miss Gillette a few days ago who has also helped me. I think ~ told you that ~ called on Mr. H. D. Smith of Plantsville. He is a capital man. Any communication sent to Hartford Ct. before the ~5 inst will reach me. Yours faithfully Booker T. Washington ALS BTW Folder President's Once Vault ViHaI. Clipping of May 7, 188z (Springfield Republican) attached. BTW's reference to his previous mention of his visit to Smith establishes the recipient as Marshall. BTW had mentioned this visit a week earlier. (See BTW to Marshall, May a, 188~.) ~ Mrs. George E. Howard. 2 William Tappan Eustis. 3 Samuel Giles Buckingham. 4 Springfield Daily Republican, May 6, 1882, 6; May 7, 1882, 6; May 8, 1882, 5; May 9, 1882, 6. 5 Albert Harris Tolman. 6 Lucy Douglas Gillett. 205
