APRIL · 1882 Higgins and Mr. Chas. Smith very kindly showed me over the different factories. The latter accompanied me to the depot and gave me $s.oo. When I got to Florence I found out that Mr. A. L. Williston7 the gentleman whom I went to see, had moved to Northampton Mass. Took horse cars for Northampton. I called on Mr. Williston at 73/2 P.M. He has a large mansion finely furnished. He said that he would give something but could not give much as he has so many calls. He promised to forward his am't to Gen. Marshall. Mr. Mead (A.M.A. ~ ~ came in and I left. MAY 3 Took Ohs AM from Northampton to Springfield, Mass. arrived at S. about ~ ~.30 A.M. Called on Mr. Homer Merriam9 Pub. Webster's Dictionary. He rec'd me kindly, but did not care to give any money for reed estate. He said that he would help one or two needy students when school began. CaDed on Mr. Chas Merriam. He said that he was out of business and was too told?] to make money was supporting a S. School Mis. in Ala. which was all he was able to do now. He rec'd me kindly. MAY 4 Went back to Northampton to get Miss Davidson's letter but found none. Called on Rev Dr Eustisi° who gave me a letter of introduction. Did not collect any money. Things looked rather gloomy. MAY 5 Returned to Springfield from Northampton. Started out with a new will to succeed. Called on Drs Gladden2i & Buckingham.~2 The latter gave me encouragement and several good names. Collected from individuals $40. Called on Mrs Geo. E. Howard who gave me several good names and treated me kindly. MAY 6 Was not so successful as on the proceeding day. Collected from individuals and got more promised $~ 3.oo. Dr. Eustis invited me to speak in his church Sunday evening. MAY 7 Spent most of the day at hotel. Spoke in the evening at Dr. Eustis' church to an appreciative audience. Rec'd several small gifts. 199
