The page presentation framework of the Booker T. Washington papers is designed to provide researchers worldwide with searchable access to the thousands of pages comprising the fourteen volumes, most of which are out of print. Adapted from the National Academy Press's Open Book framework, this framework allows searching down to the page level, provides sorting of search results chronologically, enables easy navigation across multiple volumes, and allows page-by-page local printing (via PDF) of every page.

The BOOKER T. WASHINGTON Papers traces of peonage rubbed away but lynching and many other cruel practices in the South will also disappear. TLpS and enclosure Con. 445 BTW Papers DLC. ~ Washington had suggested to Ward that The Independent give attention to the Bailey case as the beginning of the end of peonage. Hayes encouraged BTW to send him some facts on which to base an editorial. (Ward to BTW, Jan. ~3, 1 I, Con. 445, BTW Papers, DLC.) 2 BTW's draft article appeared almost verbatim as an unsigned editorial in The Independent, 70 (Jan. 26, 1 ~ ), 2~3-~4. The only changes were a few punctuation marks. 526
