The page presentation framework of the Booker T. Washington papers is designed to provide researchers worldwide with searchable access to the thousands of pages comprising the fourteen volumes, most of which are out of print. Adapted from the National Academy Press's Open Book framework, this framework allows searching down to the page level, provides sorting of search results chronologically, enables easy navigation across multiple volumes, and allows page-by-page local printing (via PDF) of every page.

The BOOKER T. WASHINGTON Papers To Timothy Thomas Fortune [Tuskegee, Ala.] November 2, 19 Personal. My dear Mr. Fortune: ~ have yours under date of October agth and am very glad to hear from you. ~ read with deep interest and satisfaction the policy which you outlined in your letter and ~ know that it is the same policy which you have always stuck to. Fast, ~ am not deceived by conditions in Washington. Whenever have been there and spoken directly to the masses of the people, ~ found that they were with me. They understand me and are loyal. The type of people who are opposing me and criticis~ng me I do not believe would be true to anybody very~ong. You strike at the heart of the matter when you refer to white leadership. As you know, ~ have never aspired to leadership. ~ have simply tried to do my duty, but there Is a type of colored people, and Wash~ngton seems to be the headquarters for them, who have been educated by white people usually in Northern institutions, who are never happy unless they are worshiping at the feet of some white man. No matter how insignificant or irresponsible the white man may be, they are perfectly happy if he gives them the slightest attention and they are willing to fall over themselves both in contributing money and In rendering worship whenever a certain type of white man crooks the finger. This type of black people are mad in the first place because God macle them black, instead of white, and it is very hard to reconcile them to anything that is rational. ~ note with interest what you say about Prof. Moore's article. ~ shad read it when the paper comes. shall hope to see you soon. Yours very truly, Booker T. Washington TLpS Con. S02 BOW Papers DLC. ~60
