OCTOBER · I9 I 4 2 Maurice Smethurst Evans ( I854-I92o), a Nate se~cgationut, wrote ~ Black and White in South East Africa (London, 19~), ~-~3, ~7, that the education of Africans and Indians should be designed to prevent ''overlapping of the races'' and consequent friction. Agricultural education was less likely in hit view to cause overlapping of the ''spheres of activity'' than literary or industrial education. He later, after visiting Tuskegee, wrote Black and White in the Southc~n States: A Study of the Race Problem in the U.S. from a South African Point of View (London, I 9 ~ 5 ~ . 3 Loram later published his dissertation, The Education of the South African Native (London, ~ 9 ~ 7 ~ . From William Colfax Graves Chicago September 29, ~ 9 ~ 4 Dear Dr. Washington' Mr. Rosenwald, as a member of the Advisory Committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, has been asked to make suggestions as to the possible candidates for the first award of the Spingarn Medal. This medal, as no doubt you are aware, Is offered by Dr. ]. E. Spingarn annually ''to be awarded for the highest or noblest achievement by an American Negro during the preceding year'' upon certain terms and conditions. It Is a gold medal not costing more than $~oo.oo. Mr. Rosenwald would very much appreciate your assistance in recommendations to this Committee. Will you, at your convenience, write him what Colored man or what Colored woman, or several of them, who might be considered candidates for the award?
