The BOOKER T. WASHINGTON Papers can, members of the military organization, with arms furnished by the government, had contributed more than the average number of shots fired by the lynchers in riddling the body with bullets. ~ have been in Americus since July ~ go'. My home is at Putnam in Schley County, my family still residing there. We employ many colored people on our plantations. We have never had one brought before the court. ~ superintended both white and colored schools for ~4 years before coming here. During the time there was not a single murder in the county, and the courts would convene on Mondays twice each year, and finish all business in nearly every instance in one day. But a change has come about, even in Schiey County. Back behind ad this, there Is more, but it is not to be written on paper. ~ have written you only as a matter of information; that ~ knowing, and that you may know the truth, and that knowing it, as bad as it is. we mav make the most of it. This is only a private letter , , so far as my name Is concerned. ~ am trusting that the like will never occur age, and yet ~ fee] these are times demanding, from somewhere, tactful, careful, diplomatic, strong, and sensible, people to grapple with the situation.
