The page presentation framework of the Booker T. Washington papers is designed to provide researchers worldwide with searchable access to the thousands of pages comprising the fourteen volumes, most of which are out of print. Adapted from the National Academy Press's Open Book framework, this framework allows searching down to the page level, provides sorting of search results chronologically, enables easy navigation across multiple volumes, and allows page-by-page local printing (via PDF) of every page.

MAY. i9~2 To Kelly Miller Tuskegee, Ala.] May 29, 19~2 Personal and Confidential My dear Professor MiBer: ~ do not mind saying to you through my pen what ~ intended to say in person, had we had an opportunity to meet. Of course, this is highly confidential and Is not to pass from your hands. ~ very much hope that the Board wit] not attempt to select a President at the meeting next Saturday. ~ think it will be a mistake to do this and ~ have so written one or two of the Trustees. ~ think the whole matter ought to be postponed for a special meeting and give us time to deliberate carefully. I am very sorry on account of our own Commencement it is a physical Impossibility for me to be present at the June meeting. There are two questions to be decided: First: has the time come when a colored man should be at the head of Howard University? Without committing myself on this point, would say I believe it has, still I confess ~ am open to argument. Second, if a colored man is to be put in charge, ~ have thoroughly made up my mind that you are the person. You are the logical man and I find the country practically unanimous on this point. If the main question as to the advisability of putting in a colored man is decided in the affirmative, ~ do not believe there would be any opposition to amount to anything to your being appointed and ~ would do whatever I could to further that end. If a white man is to be chosen, ~ am very anxious to have a conference with you before ~ enter into any meeting looking toward the choosing clef a white man. Yours very truly, Booker T.
