The page presentation framework of the Booker T. Washington papers is designed to provide researchers worldwide with searchable access to the thousands of pages comprising the fourteen volumes, most of which are out of print. Adapted from the National Academy Press's Open Book framework, this framework allows searching down to the page level, provides sorting of search results chronologically, enables easy navigation across multiple volumes, and allows page-by-page local printing (via PDF) of every page.

The BOOKER T. WASHINGTON Papers To John Harvey Kelloggs [Tuskegee, Ala.] April 3, 19~2 My dear Dr. Kellogg: When ~ was in Battle Creek a little over a year ago, you were generous enough to give us $500.00 toward our operat~ng expenses for the year. Of course, I understand fully that that gift did not imply any promise to continue to help us from year to year. During the past year, however, ~ have been devoting a good deal of my time and strength to an effort to increase our Endowment Fund, and have had some success in that direction. In the meantime we have gotten behind in our operating expenses, and if you could see your way clear to help us again this year, it would be very much appreciated, assure you. ~ shad long remember my visit to Bathe Creek. ~ am glad to say that Mr. Crayton2 is rendering fine service in many directions here. He is fast opening people's eyes to what your methods mean. The marked portion of the enclosed circular ~ hope will interest you. If you do not care, however, to give on the plan outlined here, you can give in any way that you deem wise. Yours very truly, Booker T. Washington TLps Con. 754 BTW Papers DLC. ~ John Harvey Kellogg (~852-~943), a surgeon who graduated from Bellevue Hospital Medical College, established the Battle Creek (Mich. ~ Sanitarium in 1876. His activities expanded from medical practice to include public health, nutrition, and massage. His diet foods were the basis for the development of the Kellogg breakfast food business. 2 William P. Crayton was a nurse at the Battle Creek Sanitarium from egos through 19~. BTW said of him ~ an address at Battle Creek in 19~4: ''Some three years ago I found myself almost out of commission physically. Without my knowledge or consent, my wife in some way got hold of a colored man trained here under Doctor Kellogg, by the name of Mr. Crayton. He came to Tuskegee, was installed in my home by my wife and for six months he had charge of me. At the end of that six months I was a new man, and not only a new man, but I knew more about living and enjoying life than I had ever known before. And so I want to express to you, Doctor Kellogg, my deep personal gratitude.'' (See An Address on the Negro Race at the First National Conference on Race Betterment, Jan. 8—I 2, I 9 I 4, below, vol.
