May 29, 19 (Personal) Private My dear Doctor: The Hagan matter has been interfered with by the recent change of Police Commissioners in this city. As you know, Commissioner Cropsey~ was forced out, and Captain Rhinel~nder Waldo was appointed. You may recall that ~ introduced you to Waldo one day in Nassau Street. He was then Fire Commissioner. He Is a good friend of mine, but is, as his name would suggest, an aristocrat, and a great stickler for merit promotions without allowing any other influence to affect them. I will, however, approach him on his gentle side in the very near future, and see if ~ cannot bring about the desired result. Concerning the matter mentioned in yours of the Pith instant, I beg to say that ~ took it up with Mr. Loeb on Saturday and he promised to write ''our friend''3 at Washington at once and tell him all about the mans MilholIand is pushing. ~ have secured several samples of the literature put out by the colored democrats last Fall, which was written by ''the Atlanta man.'' AD of it criticrses, and much of it abuses, President Taft. This ought to prevent his landing. Rest assured that I will leave no stone unturned. Yours very may, Charles W.
