He is the kind of man that Mr. Taft ought to have had from the beginning. I am to go to Beverly again soon. From Oswald Garrison VilIard Winter Harbor, Maine, August 4, To My dear Mr. Washington, I do not know if your attention has been called to the Pink Franklin cased I enclose copy of a letter just received, from Ex-Attorney General Bonaparte who takes the same view as Mr. Pillsbury, that Franklin has been sacrificed to the stupidity and conceit of his colored counsel. In any event, an innocent man who shot in self-defence, will be done to death unless prompt measures are taken. We are endeavoring to circulate a petition through our organization. I am wondering if we could not get the President to take an interest in the case. A word from Mr. Roosevelt would help, of course. You yourself may have certain lines of action among white and colored people which could be quickly put into effect and might at least cause the commutation of the sentence. If you care to see it and have not already done so, you can obtain a copy of Mr. Bonaparte's brief ort the Pink Franklin case from my office. Do help to save this victim of race prejudice!
