The BOOKER T. WASHINGTON Papers To Ernest Lyon Tuskegee, Ala.] June ~ I, 19 lo Confid ential: My dear Mr. Minister: Of course, you are advised by now of Dr. W. D. Crum's appointment and confirmation as Minister Resident to Liberia. You have also received my letter, advising as to the fact that a change was being contemplated. All that could be done in the way of staying your removal was done, but when the Department got to the place where it would simply state that it could not ignore some of the charges that had been brought against you, I was put in the position of not being able to do anything, especially, when I could not learn what the charges were. I do not know how soon Dr. Crum will be arranging to take the place, but I felt that I should let you know that I kept in touch with the situation, and that I did not hesitate to do what I could. When you return to America, I shall want to see and talk with you. Yours truly Booker T. Washington P.S.
