American Historical Review

Moureen Coulter
Assistant Editor for Book Reviews

Dear Reviewer:

We ask you to keep the following guidelines in mind.

We expect reviewers to write thoughtful and engaging critiques that explain the basic argument of a book, assess its strengths and weaknesses, and place the book in its historiographical context. And we would like them to do so in a way that addresses readers outside the bounds of their particular specialty.

1. Please look over the enclosed Copyright Transfer. If you cannot agree to it, please do not proceed with the review. If it meets with your approval kindly sign and date it, then return to us in the enclosed envelope.

2. Please submit two originals of your review, double-spaced. Do not fax these; our production system requires hard copy that can be read by an optical scanner, you may however, send your review as an email attachment using microsoft word (preferably) to ahr@indiana.edu.

3. Please leave the top half of the first page blank so that the proper bibliographical heading may be added at the AHR office.

4. Your name and institutional affiliation or location should appear on separate lines at the lower right hand corner of the last page.

5. Please keep within the assigned word limit. Because space is at a premium in the AHR, reviews that exceed the assigned length must be shortened by the editors or returned to the reviewer to be shortened. Contact us if you believe the book merits more space, should not be reviewed, or should be reviewed separately (in the case of books selected for a joint review).

6. All reviews are edited to conform to the AHR house style and standard literary usage to achieve greater economy of space and clarity of meaning. If you have questions on form or style, please consult the University of Chicago Press's Manual of Style.

a.Quotations should be kept short and should be accompanied by the page number.

b. If you refer to other scholars or historical figures, please include complete names. If you refer to scholarly works other than the book under review please provide complete titles, publication dates, and periodical title, if applicable. These references should appear in the text; reviews are never footnoted.c. If you are reviewing a collection of essays, please do not merely list the contents of the book.

7. Please keep the AHR office informed of any changes of address so that edited reviews, tearsheets, and future requests may reach you promptly.

8. Reviews can be sent electronically to ahr@indiana.edu.

Thank you for contributing to the AHR.

Sincerely,

Moureen Coulter
Reviews Editor
